Greenwood-based Chawla Hotels has something even bigger planned for its four-star hotel development in Cleveland.
What it is will be announced this evening in New York, according to Suresh Chawla, the hotel company’s president.
“Once this announcement is made official, I think it will be safe to say that this will bring a huge economic tourism benefit to the Mississippi Delta,” Chawla said this morning from New York.
Chawla and his brother, Dinesh, the company’s CEO, arrived there Sunday night. They are expected to remain through Tuesday.
Suresh Chawla declined to give further details, other than to say the announcement would have pleased his father, Dr. V.K. Chawla, the hotel company’s founder who died in 2015.
“With where we started from 30 years ago in the hotel business in Greenwood, my father would have been very proud to have seen this day,” he said.
Chawla Hotels, which started in 1989 with a Comfort Inn in Greenwood, now includes 17 properties, all in the Delta. Three of the hotels are in Greenwood.
The Lyric Hotel, currently under construction, is the company’s first endeavor into a full-service, four-star hotel. It is the centerpiece of a 17-acre hotel complex being developed about a mile from the Grammy Museum.
The hotel is scheduled to be completed by early spring 2018.
